Truckee, Calif. on Donner Lake

This year, skip Lake Tahoe and head 16 miles south to Donner Lake’s warmer water temperatures and small-town atmosphere. Originally an Old West town (you can still visit the original 1875 jailhouse), Truckee is a great base for exploring the lake’s many outdoor activities—lately, stand-up paddleboarding is the sport of choice. Truckee also has a growing local art scene—a slew of new galleries has opened recently, including Riverside Studios, which sells pottery, jewelry, and clothing made by a collective of area artists, and Carmel Gallery, home to Olof and Elizabeth Carmel’s impressionistic prints and photographs. Whatever your plans, carb up first with the All Day Addiction, a concoction of hash browns, avocado, Canadian bacon, and two eggs, at 1940s-style diner Jax at the Tracks. Later, you can relive your adventures over a Base Camp Golden Ale at Fifty Fifty Brewing Co., where all the beers are brewed in-house, and watch the sun set over the water from the redwood deck at Loch Leven Lodge.

Old Brockway in Kings Beach is open now!

Coyote Moon will open May 21. As you may have heard Coyote Moon is not part of the Tahoe Mountain Club anymore due to the financial difficulties of East West Partners. The original owners are taking the course public again.

Tahoe Donner is opening May 28th. See below for course prices and passes.

Here I am, early in the morning on Donner Lake – can’t see more than 100′ in front of me. Good thing it’s calm. I did catch a couple Mackinaw after I found my spot – fun!

Donner Lake Kayak Launch

Where do you put in? If you live in Tahoe Donner you can access the lake via the Tahoe Donner private beach.

If not drive on past the Tahoe Donner Beach for a couple blocks and you will see a brown pump station on the left and a couple docks for public use – many people, including locals, put in there. Be careful not to block the bike lanes when you park – they get a lot of use from joggers and bike riders.

Others drive on down to the public boat launch ramp close to West End and launch there.

Another option is to access via Donner State Park and drive through to the China Cove Beach and put in there.
